San Rafael's Downtown San Rafael Arts District was officially designated as a California Cultural District by the California Arts Council, recognizing it as one of only 14 such districts in the state. The designation reflects the concentration of arts institutions, galleries, theaters, and artist communities in downtown. Art Works Downtown alone houses four galleries and nearly 30 artist studios in a 130-year-old building where visitors can observe artists at work.
The arts district is anchored by several anchor institutions: the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center (a historic art deco theater showing independent and international films), the Falkirk Cultural Center (an 1888 Queen Anne Victorian mansion with art exhibitions and education programs), Youth in Arts (providing visual and performing arts training for children), and Marin Shakespeare Company (which performs Shakespeare summer seasons at Dominican University). Beyond these formal institutions, the downtown hosts the Second Fridays Art Walk and other regular community arts events that draw residents and visitors.
